Llynnau Mymbyr
Located alongside the A4086, close to Capel Curig, Llynnau Mymbyr is easy to find. Travelling from the A5 you pass the Plas Y Brenin outdoor centre, and the lakes are on your left. Just past the first lake you’ll find a large parking area by a large rock.
From here it’s a short walk down to the shore of the lake, but it can be muddy, wet and slippery, so take care. You’ll also find that the rocks along the shore are very slippery, so it’s easy to lose your footing if you choose to venture onto them.
The classic view from this location is west towards the peaks of Snowdon, so it’s a perfect spot for a stunning sunset shot. The only real difficulty I’ve found is getting a good composition using the rocks along the shore in the foreground. These rocks often look messy and the composition becomes unbalanced as it’s easy for them to dominate one side of the frame. But with a bit of patience it’s possible to use them to add a bit of foreground interest. This spot is also pretty good for misty, atmospheric shots on still days, as it often gathers in the valley and over the lakes, especially around sunrise.
